Acupuncture and Moxibustion is a tradition of medicine that has been in continuous use in China for several thousands of years. One of it’s distinguishing feature is that it uses a diagnostic and treatment approach known as “Using the external to treat the Internal”. In normal circumstances, the body is efficient in ensuring a smooth supply of blood and nutrients to all body tissues, internal organs and cells, which is the basis for both life and good health. In Chinese Medicine terms this can be understood as maintaining equilibrium between Qi, Blood, Yin and Yang. When this equilibrium is disturbed, disease can develop. There may be blockages or a stagnant flow of Qi in the energy pathways of our body, resulting in a sense of lethargy or emptiness, or more tangibly, obstruction of the flow of Blood through our arteries, veins, blood vessels and capillaries. Furthermore, in severe illness, our organ systems may be impacted, and manifest in symptoms that Western Medicine will retroactively diagnose and prescribe medicine to substitute for what the body is not now able to do. The treatment approach of Acupuncture and Moxibustion is known as “dredging the Qi and Blood” in case of stagnation, “Regulating Yin and Yang” in cases of deficient functioning or conversely hyperfunction, and locating and alleviating the source of illness rather than just treating symptoms. In Clinical Medicine, the “Four Diagnostic methods” of Palpation, Questioning, Smelling and Observation, are used to identify and classify disease, as well as understand the organ systems, energy channels and body substances involved. Together, this information is used to prescribe the disease and treat the patient. Treatment approaches include: Unblocking the energy Channels, Adjusting Qi and Blood, Balancing Yin and Yang, as well as harmonizing the Internal Organs. As a result the patient can be brought back to a state of health.
